Does anyone know why many antique kerosene lanterns had red globes.?
I've noticed many antique lanterns have red globes (non-railroad) and I'm trying to determine what the purpose of red vs clear globes is. Does anyone know why so many antique lanterns were manufactured with red lenses?
What you may have seen were the lanterns used to mark the port, or left side of a boat or ship. Some lanterns with red globes were also used as warning lights during storms and road work projects.
