are betta fish known to jump out of their fish bowls? Should they be in a bowl with a vented lid?

I have had experience with a few bettas. You can believe any answer you get from this site, but please not from anyone who never has kept betta fish. They will jump if the water conditions are bad and they decide to take a chance that might get them to a healthier body of water. Betta fish don't really like living in small bowls or cups. This is just something that people in the pet fish business tell you. They can stack cups with bettas in them on top of each other to conserve space. However, no fish will be happy or live very long in a cup. They need water changes like any other fish. If the new water is drastically different from the old water in temperature, or pH, the fish may decide to jump. But not changing the water will cause your fish to be exposed to toxic levels of nitrogenous wastes. Get a bigger tank or at least a bigger bowl that you can put a filter in and a pump to give your betta some air. Betta are like goldfish in that they do not die in a short enough period for you to get your money back from the pet store when they are kept in bowls. Unfortunately, this is the only reason that they are sold this way. Other fish will die very quickly w/o aeration and filtration, but goldfish and bettas are tougher. Betta fish cannot live very long (multiple years) without a filter, something to keep them from jumping to their deaths, and an air pump. Good luck.
