If you decide to wash the lacquered brass there are some tips that you can only use.

Tole lamp bases can be rubbed with mineral oil containing substance turpentine. Pewter requires a mild polish using silver polish. Bronze lamps, statues, book ends, etc can be dusted or washed with soap scum smooth. Merely wipe lacquered bronze with a damp cloth.

BRASS LACQUER never polished. Only dust in soft foam or lukewarm wash, rinse with warm water and pat dry. If the water is too hot and can kill the lacquer. If lacquered brass is dirty and the finish begin to peel, remove the lacquer with acetone (from a drugstore) and polish.

BRASS WITH AN ANTIQUE FINISH is simply rubbed with a little lemon oil (paraffin oil for furniture), then with a dry cloth.

A LEMON CUT DIPPED IN SALT, or hot vinegar and salt clean brass the old fashioned way. This method can be adapted miniature brass. Whenever you have no ornamentation and wooden handles or buttons, you can get rid of most of the corrosion by boiling for a few minutes in water with some vinegar and salt. Wash with hot soapy water then rinse and dry, then finish them with brass polish.

GOOD POLISHES FOR COPPER found in your grocery store. Follow exactly the instructions given in the container. With some, tarnish returns quickly if the copper is not washed thoroughly after polishing.

TO MIX YOUR OWN COPPER POLISH: make a paste of parts equal amounts of salt, flour and vinegar. Rub the copper with this mixture until it is clean, or let the pasta remain there for a while, then wash with hot soapy water, rinse, and Polish. For end use or rottenstone Polish whiting, mixed with a paste with olive oil.

ENAMEL COPPER is dusted or washed, if necessary, with lukewarm water and a mild soap or detergent. Rinse with warm water and pat dry.

Tole LAMP BASES (AND TRAYS), when they look dull, it can be rubbed lightly with mineral oil containing a little turpentine. Mineral oil is the same as paraffin oil and essentially the same as lemon oil furniture polish. Use one part of turpentine to a ten part of oil. Wipe the article carefully cleaned with a soft cloth. (Tole is painted metal.)

PEWTER IS A SOFT METAL and requires a mild polish. Silver polish or use a mixture of their own. For a dull glare of lights and ornaments pewter rottenstone use or whiting mixed to a paste with olive oil. Apply pasta with a soft cloth and rub the metal until it is clean. Then wash, rinse and dry. For a shiny finish use whiting mixed with denatured alcohol. Rub on with a soft cloth and let dry layer. Then polish the pewter by rubbing with a soft clean cloth. Wash and rinse thoroughly after polishing and wipe dry tin. The Stubborn spots usually can be removed from pewter with very fine (No. 00) steel wool, dipped in olive oil. The oil is to keep the steel wool scratch. After to remove stains, polish the tin again, as already described.

BRONZE LAMPS, STATUES, BOOK ENDS, etc, which need more than dusting, can be washed with one of the following: mild soapsuds, hot vinegar or hot buttermilk. Rinse immediately and thoroughly and dry clean the bronze. To clarify the bronze, rottenstone dry rub or whiting. Rinse to remove all dust and dry.

LAQUEADO BRONZE is merely wiped with a damp cloth. Sometimes is the lamp are made of steel which has been given a bronze finish. When this begins to wear, or corrosion spots appear, a new coat of lacquer bronze is needed.
