Hard candy is considered any kind you have to suck on. The majority of hard candy is made from mainly sugars. The remaining ingredients are color and juices to give it flavor.
It generally has a creamy or sweet taste, depending on the ingredients.
Hard candy is very popular for those trying to stop smoking because it gives them something to do with their mouth. The rest of us typically enjoy hard candy because it tastes good. You need to be careful with hard candy as it does pose a choking hazard, especially to small children.
The most popular type of hard candy is the Lifesaver, with the red ones being the best liked. It is rumored the Lifesaver was designed with a hole in the middle to allow an individual to be able to suck air through it in the event it got lodged in the windpipe. However, they are simply named after the life preservers they resemble.
The Lifesaver was introduced in 1912 to offer an alternative for candy lovers in the summer since chocolate tends to melt. The first flavor of Lifesaver was the peppermint. The fabulous five flavor pack we love today was introduced in 1935. Today you can find Lifesavers in the original peppermint, the five flavors, miniature rolls, spearmint, and tropical fruit. Of course, they is the special all red packages available for those who bought the five flavor pack just for the one or two red ones in there.
Rock candy is an old fashioned type of hard candy that looks like colorful rocks. It is generally sold on a stick that you lick, but instead of being a solid circle or square like other suckers, the rocks are done the entire stick except for the very bottom. You can still purchase rock candy at some wonderful candy stores where they make it by hand. You can also purchase it on the internet. Rock candy is not easily found at retail stores.
You can choose to make your own hard candy at home. You will need a double boiler, a candy thermometer, and candy molds. You can choose to make round or square hard candy. There are also molds to make suckers. There are various flavorings you can purchase from a hobby store to create delicious tasting hard candy. You can search the internet for wonderful recipes and tips for making your own hard candy.
