There is no better kitchen treat than your own homemade ice cream! Kitchen ice cream makers have become so fancy and so low price that there are almost no excuses for not making your dessert at home. You can have fresh, rich, custom dessert icecream in as little as 10 minutes.
To select your ice cream maker, first consider how ice cream is made in the kitchen. The base ingredients are milk, cream, sugar and eggs, which can be mixed with fruits, syrups, or flavorings; these kitchen staples are then slowly frozen. The secret to these makers is to freeze the mixture slowly while stirring or churning to prevent the mix from freezing into ice crystals. The delicious dessert is ready as soon as it is frozen!
Home ice cream makers come in several styles according to how they freeze the ice cream mix, and according to how they stir the mix. Many new machines contain a built in freezer for cooling, and a built in motor for stirring. These machines are completely automated, and may be found for under $100.00. Other machines have a hand crank that you manually turn every few minutes during freezing, and they freeze the mixture with either prefrozen cooland packs (like ice packs) or with mixtures of salt and icewater that you add yourself.
Other ice cream makers have just a container for the milk, cream and egg mix, and a plastic hand crank that you turn every 10 minutes or so. You put these machines in your own freezer to cool them, removing them for the occasional stir. You can find some of these ice cream kitchen aids for as little as $10.00. You will also find excellent ice cream recipes in many inexpensive books online.
