Why does my betta open up his gills?
I just put my betta in a 10 gallon tank, added some salt, some chlorine neutralizer.He open ups his gills like crazy and the tips are red.(2 on each side)What's wrong???????????
there are two reasons why this could possibly be.
1. he sees something in the tank as a threat (usually something moving) like a plant, so he tried to look bigger by opening his gills. make sure you don't add any other fish in that tank.
2. the water is bad. change the water. if you know the water is clean, then you didnt do the the *fishless nitrite cycle* long enough.. this is something you have to do before adding fish to the tank. it's basically leaving the tank for weeks (yes, with the de-chlorinator and de-chloraminator) so that these essential good bacterias establish in your tank so your fishies can be happy. if you didn't do this, seperate the fish immediately into at least a 1 gallon tank (dont worry, just for a while!) sorry to say, but for your fish, its like a human having shampoo on his/her own eyes. don't worry though, betta fish are very tough and i bet your fish will survive!BY THE WAY< BETTA FISH ARE FRESHWATER FISH< NOT SALT! unless this is freshwater aquarium salt, then its ok 
*by the way, if you didnt do the fishless cycle, i would suggest going to a pet store and buy a thing for speeding up the good bacteria's establishment. this could speed it up to a week or a few days.
