Several steps are required before performing any stained glass repair; first and foremost, it is important to adjust the restoration process to the size, age and design of the object you are attempting to repair. If all you need to do is put together the pieces of a window panel or to recondition a chipped spun glass figurine, things should not be too complex in terms of stained glass repair.
The great challenge appears when there are old “treasures” that require stained glass repair, and only professionals in the field can be expected to carry on the task successfully. Sometimes, repairs that are made in a hurry or poorly executed can aggravate the condition of a stained glass object that was exposed to former deterioration. Therefore, stained glass repair can be undertaken after careful evaluation of the condition of the stained glass object.
Stained glass repair is a lot easier and even superficial for minor cracks and sagging, but when advanced bulges and extensive damage is obvious, special techniques and a lot of skill is required in order to restore the former glory of a glass object. Preparing the surface for the intervention is essential before making the stained glass repair as such; cleaning is an important part of the procedure that should never be treated lightly.
Dirt, soot, grime and dust have to be carefully removed before starting the stained glass repair as such deposits alter the quality of light filtering that stained glass should have in the first place. The type of cleaner should be chosen considering the glass model and structure, since particular chemicals could alter the paint when entering through the cracks in the glass. Therefore, unless you need to make some form of stained glass repair for trifles, it is good to turn to a professional for assistance.
Unless you are certain of the stability of the paint, do not use any cleaner for the stained glass repair. The most likely to peel off is the paint that was applied cold or which was exposed to an improper fire passage process. The disappointment is pretty big sometimes when one cannot manage to perform any stained glass repair at all because of the risk of damaging the item even further.
Silicones are the chemicals generally used to seal the eventual cracks or to facilitate the stained glass repair in case the panels have suffered from harsh weather exposure. Shaky or rattling windows require a simple application of sealants, but if other damage is also noticed you may have to entrust the repair to a professional in the field.
