How do you remove rust from a cast iron skillett?
WE have a cast iron skillett that has not been cured and somehow it rusted. There's a large spot in the bottom. I need to know how to get the rust out, if it's possible.
Hey, it's metal. Take some sandpaper and sand the rust out. I don't care what you start with, but end with a 200 grit or finer.
Then, immediately season the pan. Rub it down, inside AND out with lard, bacon grease, or vegetable oil. Place in your oven UPSIDE DOWN, and cook at 250 for at least an hour.
Never use detergent when washing. If you do, your remove the grease in the pores of the pan. If you do this, you have to reseason. Clean water only. If it is seasoned right, it is just like non stick cookware.
Dry, and wipe down with oil when you put it away.
