I have a signed ceramic coffee mug, how do I preserve it?

There is a clear, glossy spray called Ceramicoat. It looks like a china glaze when dry. You can buy it at a craft store or at a Walmart. If it is a valuable collector's signature that you want to preserve, I would be more inclined to take it to a china store and have it done professionally.
