Crystal Glass
How can you tell the difference between glass and real glass?

My kids bought a rose quartz crystal necklace and a large clear / white a specialty glass shop. His friends insist that the crystals are not "real." I've heard some stores sell glass under the appearance of crystals true, but how do you tell?

One way to tell would be through the way it is faceted. Mineral crystal structures have been identified that can only be cut into a jewel / "crystal" form along fracture planes determined. Obviously, you can not actually look that, and can not I. There are very few minerals glasslike transparent enough to be confused (especially if you know how to fracture). Even fewer of these minerals are fairly common finding a normal glass shop - such as minerals that are being exchanged for. To compare the glass as possible to the glass as possible, would require a sample of each one, to see what a scratch (Mohs hardness) than the other. Basically, if you are not familiar with the identification of real minerals and crystals, and all that you have is a glass of something, there is little you can do. The only way to treat it really possible to take the test Mohs scratch their crystals. Most possibly these transparent crystals are softer than glass, and would be zero - but then you would have scratched glass. I would recommend accepting the 99.9% probability that it is just glass, and enjoy anyway.
