Cleaning Vintage China

I love the thrill of the hunt for vintage items for me and for my stores. But it can be a messy job. Finding virgins Articles half of the century, for example, may mean digging into the back of kitchen cabinets in sales of goods for parts of the wedding list of quality, treasure dishes or glassware that has been carefully stored, they are rarely used, often forgotten ...

Detecting a jewel through decades of grime kitchen is only the first step. The next challenge is cleaning. How best to remove years of accumulated grease and dust without spoiling the prize?

Of course, first place to start would be warm water and mild detergent. But beware! Make sure your dishes at room temperature first - do not directly bring a car plunk cold winters and hot water. China harvest can be very susceptible to extreme heat and cold, and this type of therapy can lead to breaking, chipping or madness.

Before starting, check the label to make sure your detergent does not contain chlorine or lime, which may be too strong for old china.

Bloc of hard surfaces in your area of the sink to avoid accidental impact. Dip each piece separately and wipe gently with a soft cloth. I would not use a scouring pad or brush, as it could cause scratches or worse. Rinse with warm water and air dry.

Often, a gentle wash is all that is needed. However, there occasions when even the hot water and soap can not do anything against the monster of fat.

I've seen a product called Spray 9 recommended, but this is a product professional and can not be purchased at your local store. If you have a lot of China to clean it may be worth a try. There are many other existing products, such as Formula 409, which are also known to work against grease and grime, but not recommended for food preparation surfaces, which makes me hesitate to use them.

So far the best product I've found to clean vintage china is our helper age target = "_blank" title = "Bar Keepers Friend"> Bar Keepers Friend. I first saw this recommended target = "_blank" title = "Pyrex Love"> Love Pyrex dishes to clean Pyrex (which has proved very useful for removing metal marks!) And decided to try some particularly dirty dishes. You can clearly see the results in the photo below.

Bar Keepers Friend is nontoxic and safe for use in objects and spaces that will contact food, and so I feel safer to recommend it. You should be able to find at your local supermarket or DIY store if not available online. The result can be spectacular, but as always, use common sense and not use in areas where there is gold or decoration on the glass.

So, you have cleaned your article and may now find there are no cracks present. The worst kind of cracking comes with brown spots on and around it, and this can completely ruin the look of a piece. As a merchant, not ground sell anything with this type of damage, except on rare occasions when I feel it adds character. One thing I am definitely not comfortable with cleaning the stain before sale. However, this is a common practice and is a technique that works very well. You may want to try if you have stubborn stains on your own pieces.

To remove stains from the cracks that have to get the peroxide beauty shop, and cut with water from water 1-2 parts of peroxide (Note: These instructions are for peroxide - do not use bleach! Also, be sure to wear gloves and eye protection!). Immerse the element of the solution in a tupperware or glass container, cover with lid or saran wrap and go. It can take up to a week to fade brown marks. Do not use this method when cold enamel, gold (gold) or other decoration on enamel.
